We are receiving many questions from faculty regarding our Pilot launch of Brightspace for the Fall 2022 semester and have created this area to provide you with the most complete, up-to-date, information we have. We understand that you are eager to get started in Brightspace and as we progress in the process we will be communicating all information as we receive it. For now, we have collected many of the questions you have and answer them below.
General Pilot Questions
Are my courses part of the Brightspace Pilot?
The Fall Pilot consists of those departments and faculty that submitted formal requests for inclusion by the deadline communicated to campus. If you are teaching in any of the departments below, then you will be teaching your course in Brightspace this Fall (with a few pre-approved exceptions). In addition, all faculty who submitted requests for inclusion (including those from outside of the departments listed below) are part of the pilot and have been receiving regular communications regarding next steps.
- Business Information Technology
- Criminal Justice and Emergency Services
- Dental Hygiene
- Hospitality Programs Department
- Health Information Technology
- Health Studies
- Physical Sciences
- Teacher Education/Early Childhood Education
When will Pilot Courses go live to students?
Brightspace Training and Access to Our Environment
When will I receive training in Brightspace?
Pilot faculty can register for training now through the SUNY Center for Professional Development. The CPD will be offering training in three modalities (Self-paced Asynchronous Online, Scaled Webinars, and Remote Synchronous) in order to accommodate faculty training preferences and comfort levels with technology. Regardless of modality, faculty must successfully complete a series of online assessments in order to earn a Brightspace Fundamentals Certificate and Badge from the SUNY Center for Professional Development. This badge is required for faculty to use Brightspace at SUNY Broome. Additional information regarding the training can be found on the SUNY DLE Website.
Pilot faculty Brightspace accounts have been created and all pilot faculty currently have access to the “SUNY DLE Brightspace Fundamentals Asynchronous Modules” course in Brightspace. This course houses the assessments necessary to receive the required badge of completion.
I’ve take the training, but feel that I need a refresher on some of the topics. Where should I go?
When will I be able to log into Brightspace?
Third Party Tool Integration
What is considered a “3rd Party Tool” integration?
A 3rd party tool is any external web service or interactive website that students need to access from within the Brightspace environment. Third party tools typically (but not always) involve some sort of single sign-on or authentication to an outside resource. Examples of 3rd Party Tools include (but are not limited to):
- Publishers textbooks and online interactive materials
- Online Lab simulations and activities that require student participation and tracking
- Online Testing tools
- OERs and Online Homework
Third Party Tool Integrations do not include content that is uploaded directly into the Learning Management system. PowerPoint Presentations, pdfs, Microsoft Word documents, and links to YouTube videos or other informational-only websites are NOT considered 3rd Party Tool Integrations.
I use an online textbook or other 3rd party integration in my course. Will this automatically come over to Brightspace?
What type of information do I need to collect from the vendor in order to have their product integrated into Brightspace?
SUNY will require the following information in order to integrate a product into their environment:
- VPAT (Accessibility Compliance)
- HECVAT (Risk Assessment and Security)
- SOC Type 2 Report (Security Compliance)
In addition, SUNY will need detailed instructions for integrating the tool into Brightspace. This includes:
- The type of integration that the tool uses (ex: LTI1.3, LTI 1.1, etc)
- Step-by-step documentation for the tool integration and configuration
- Any Keys and Secrets needed for final setup
Since we (at SUNY Broome) do not have the system access level to perform the integrations ourselves, we must collect this information and forward it on. Your completion of the SUNY Broome Third Party Tool Integration Request Form and inclusion of as much of the information you can obtain on your end will facilitate the process of integration and result in the tool being configured in a timely manner.
