Honorlock is the Online Remote Proctoring tool that is used at SUNY Broome for student identity verification and remote proctoring of online exams. Honorlock is integrated with the Brightspace Learning Management System and has been set up for single sign-on, so that no additional username or password are needed to access the system.
With Honorlock, students can take their online proctored exam from anywhere they have privacy, a computer that is connected to the Internet, a webcam, and a microphone. With Honorlock, there is no need for students to schedule their exam sessions in advance!
Implementing Honorlock in an Online Course
In order to use Honorlock, you must be sure that your course is coded properly in Banner. Online courses that will be using the Honorlock tool MUST be coded with the “DLAP” instructional method and must also contain the following language in the comment field of the course on the tally:
“This course requires the use of a remote proctoring tool for exams. Students must have reliable access to a compatible computer with a webcam and microphone.”
If your course is coded in Banner as using the Honorlock proctoring tool, you will receive an Honorlock Integration Request form via email from the Teaching Resource Center. This form will ask you for information regarding the course and a description of your pedagogical reasons for utilizing proctored testing. Once your request form has been processed, you will receive an email with further instructions. Please let Stephanie Malmberg know if you have any questions; her email is malmbergsm@sunybroome.edu.

Key Changes in Workflow with Honorlock
For those faculty who have used another remote proctoring tool for exams (Examity), there are a few important changes in the process and workflow with the Honorlock tool. Among them are:
-
- We no longer have to wait for a nightly import to “populate” our exams into the proctoring tool. When a test or quiz is created in Brightspace, it is immediately available in the Honorlock listing of available assessments.
-
- Exams and quizzes displayed in Honorlock are brought in with the proctoring “disabled” by default. You will need to choose which exams will be proctored and turn it on. We no longer need to worry about deleting exams that we are not proctoring.
-
- You no longer need to name your exams in a particular way or have specific setting enabled on the Brightspace side to have it displayed in Honorlock. (You do still need to set your preference of settings for how the students will take the exam and link to the gradebook, but it is not a requirement for Honorlock.)
-
- If you have a student with a preferred name in Brightspace, you should indicate this as an accommodation for the student. While Brightspace does have an algorithm that attempts to recognize common nicknames (Cynthia = Cindy, etc.) it is better to be safe by indicating this in the accommodation area.
-
- Other accommodations (e.g., extended time) are automatically pulled into Honorlock from Brightspace.
-
- Honorlock automatically creates an “access code” for the exam and populates this in the Brightspace quiz password field. Please do not set your own password, or alter the code that Honorlock puts in for you.
-
- Students no longer need to set up a profile or schedule their exams. Honorlock does recommend, however, that exams are created at least two or three days ahead of when you expect students to begin accessing them so they can adjust proctoring resources on their end if necessary
