STEP 1: Log In To Blackboard
It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to know how to access your course in Blackboard on the first day of class. You will not receive a reminder. Your Blackboard courses can be found at:
Please Refer to the “Accessing Your Online Course” document for detailed instructions.
NOTE: Online Courses typically open on the first day that the course is scheduled to run. Since we have several different parts of term at SUNY Broome, please refer to your class schedule to find the correct start date for your course. If you log in to Blackboard on the first day of class and don’t see your course listed, be sure to try again later that day. If you still don’t see your course listed on the second day of the semester, contact the Open SUNY Helpdesk at 1-844-OPENSUNY (1-844-673-6786). They can verify that you are on the roster and send an email to your instructor to remind them to make the course available.
Also note: Registrations update to Blackboard three times a day (at 6:00 am, noon, & 6:00 pm). If you just registered for a course, you will need to wait until after the next scheduled system update to access the course.
STEP 2: Test Your Computer System
This can be done right on the main login page to Blackboard (http://broome.open.suny.edu). If you see any red check marks in the Open SUNY Browser Compatibility Module, the Open SUNY Helpdesk can assist you in making the necessary changes to your computer. They can be reached at 1-844-OPENSUNY (1-844-673-6786).
STEP 3: Take The Online Student Orientation
This tutorial consists of a series of modules that will prepare you for taking an online course. It can be found on the main login screen to Blackboard at http://broome.open.suny.edu
STEP 4: Log In Frequently And Know What Is Expected Of You
Every online course has its own specific set of instructions and requirements. Make sure to check in frequently to receive announcements and updates from your instructor. Pay particular attention to the attendance and participation policies for both course completion and financial aid eligibility (if applicable).
STEP 5: Know How To Reach The Open SUNY Helpdesk
The Open SUNY HelpDesk is there to assist you with any technical issues that may arise when you are interacting with your course. They can be reached by phone at 1-844-OPENSUNY (1-844-673-6786), or on their website https://online.suny.edu/help/.
STEP 6: Utilize The Student Resources Area Of This Website
The Blackboard Student Guides will answer many of the questions you might have regarding how to participate in a Blackboard Course.
Also be sure to print out and refer to the Online Student Checklist for a detailed outline of what you need to do to prepare for and be successful in your online course!
