Enrollment and Advising

Academic advising at SUNY Broome is a joint effort between our teaching faculty and our professional advisors.

If your acceptance letter states that you are required to take a placement assessment, contact the Admissions Office to schedule an appointment.  Assessment results are used by advisors to place you in the appropriate courses based on your ability, so take it seriously and do your best!

**If you are waived from the assessment, you may contact your advisor for an appointment.

What else do you need to know about advising?  See our key tips below!

  • Prior to making an advising appointment, be sure to read through your acceptance letter thoroughly.
  • Meet with your advisor early and often!
  • Maximize your appointment by thinking about your academic and career goals.  Do you intend on transferring to a four year school or are you seeking immediate employment after graduating from SUNY Broome?
  • Consider the other commitments you have, such as family or work, as they could impact not only the amount of credits you will take but also how you build your schedule for the semester.

Lastly, as a student over the age of 18, your privacy rights are protected by FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

Financial Aid

Considerable financial aid is available at SUNY Broome Community College, and the Financial Aid Office helps students through the financial aid process.  Any student accepted into a degree or certificate program and taking one or more classes may apply for financial aid.

  • If you have missed the SUNY Broome FAFSA submission deadline, please contact Financial Aid right away.
  • SUNY Broome’s federal school code is 002862.
  •  Financial aid is linked to your course load.  Consult your academic advisor or a financial aid representative before you make changes to your schedule.

Many students wonder why they were chosen for verificationApproximately 30% of all applicants are chosen for verification by the federal processor. Applications are chosen both at random or because the application does not meet specific audit criteria that have been established. You can also be chosen by the financial aid officer that is reviewing your application for a variety of reasons. To reduce the possibility of being chosen, be sure to answer all questions on the FAFSA application with accurate information (for example: don’t round all numbers, use zero if the answer does not pertain to you, etc.).

Check the SUNY Broome calendar often to be aware of important deadlines.  Remember, you are responsible for your finances!
