SUNY Broome Celebrates
Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 – October 15, 2023
Hispanic Heritage Month first began as a celebration week in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988 under President Ronald Reagan from September 15 to October 15. According to www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov, September 15 “is significant because it is the anniversary of the independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.”
SUNY Broome is honored to recognize and celebrate the history, culture and various contributions of Hispanic Americans (people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America) during this month. It is our sincere hope that our campus community will join us in learning about and celebrating the beautifully diverse tapestry of people, history and experiences that define this month and draw inspiration from the strength and determination of the Hispanic community and its many influences on our culture at large.
