SUNY Broome Celebrates
Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 – October 15, 2024
Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 marks the celebration of Hispanic Heritage. People of Hispanic descent have made significant contributions to our cultural, political, economic and social fabric of New York State. The group includes people whose ancestors come from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
From Tito Puente and Lin-Manuel Miranda in the arts, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Young Lords, political, civil rights and social justice advocates to the entrepreneurship of Hispanic-owned businesses, Hispanic individuals continue to shape the future of New York, adding to its diversity, resilience, and cultural richness. Their contributions in every aspect of life reflect their deep-rooted influence and importance in the state’s history and evolution.
As with other underrepresented groups, community colleges serve as the point of entry for Hispanic and Latinx individuals to pursue higher education. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage, we highlight our own Hispanic community here at SUNY Broome! Per the College’s Office of Institutional Research, as of Fall 2024, of the 3,363 students enrolled, 368, or 10.94%, identify as Hispanic. Of those students, 64% are under the age of 24, 61% identify as female, and 65% attend SUNY Broome full-time. While half claim Broome County as their residence, 41% or 153 are from other New York State counties. In addition, the majority of Hispanic students are pursuing degrees in Health Sciences or Business Administration. Some students, 18%, started their college journey in SUNY Broome’s Fast Forward program, while 25 students are part of our Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).
Being our best at Broome means celebrating and acknowledging the contributions of our diverse community. Recognizing Hispanic Heritage teaches about the important historical events and figures that may be overlooked in mainstream narratives, and empowering future generations to continue building on this legacy. Throughout this month, join in the celebration of Hispanic and Latinx cultures. Learn about the traditions, languages, and customs to foster greater understanding and respect of the Hispanic community. Check out the SWARM to see what is happening around campus.
