Adventure Courses

Take your education beyond the classroom and into the world.

SUNY Broome offers a wide range of courses that will expand your horizons – whether it’s the White Mountains of New Hampshire, or making a difference to people in need in Haiti

Offerings include:

  BIO 217: Ecology of the National Parks. In this summer course, you’ll see some of the country’s most beautiful sights — while earning four college credits! Students will study the history and ecology of Glacier, Yellowstone, Tetons, Wind Cave, and Badlands national parks. 

PHS 210: Mountain Geology & Climate, a summer course that will take you to the White Mountains of New Hampshire! Not only will you learn in-depth about the region’s geology, but you’ll see it firsthand during the course of amazing hikes. 

BIO 200: Ecology of the Everglades during Winter Term. Experience America’s most unique and endangered wilderness area through an extensive wilderness camping experience, including kayaking, canoeing, bicycling and more. 

PHS 292: Discover Iceland, a Summer Term course that includes a trip to a land of amazing geological phenomena, from geysers and bubbling hot springs to waterfalls. 

BIO 215: Tropical Ecology. It culminates in a 10-day trip to Costa Rica, where you will experience incredible a tropical rainforest firsthand, along with incredible wildlife. The class visits many different forest ecosystems on the Caribbean and Pacific slopes, as well as mountaintop cloud forests 

HST 105: Global Health in Ireland, which combines hands-on learning in healthcare with a global perspective. Participants visit and observe healthcare providers in rural Ireland, while experiencing Irish culture. 

LIT 277: Irish Literature, which includes an eight-day trip over spring break to the Emerald Isle. The course surveys Irish literature from the Bronze Age to the modern era, and includes stays in Dublin, Galway and Sligo, places which inspire the imagination. 

BIO 293: Darwin, Evolution and the Victorians, which explores the cultural and scientific revolution that followed the development of Darwin’s theory of natural selection. The class culminates with a trip to London, where you will literally follow in the footsteps of the Victorians to gain a new understanding of our past, our present and perhaps our future. 

LIT 275W: London and Literature. The influence of Great Britain on American culture is deep and wide! In this course we will explore major English works and the city and culture that is depicted in them.

 Health for Haiti, a global service learning course during Winter Term where you can make a real difference in the lives of people in need. The program has brought clean water, solar energy, dental care, healthcare, bathroom facilities and more to the communities it serves.
