Success Coaching at SUNY Broome
Success Coaching supports you in unlocking your potential and identifying and achieving your vision and goals. Success Coaches support you in developing autonomy for your learning, competence in your studies and goals, and belonging within your academic program and the college.
You have an assigned success coach based on your academic program. All you need to do is schedule an appointment with your Success Coach to begin the process.

Attend a Success Workshop or Drop-in Session
Success Coaches offer Success Workshops and Drop-in Sessions designed to share resources and tools to help you succeed. All workshops are free to attend and do not require pre-registration.

Coaching is for anyone who wants to:
- Discover their strengths, interests, and motivations to take ownership of their academic and career path and become a self-regulated learner.
- Assistance clarifying their major and career path.
- Ensure they are prepared for the start of the semester with class materials including textbooks and laptops and help with navigating campus technologies.
- Identify and create an action plan for achieving goals and overcome obstacles impeding academic success.
- Develop organization and time-management skills for improving school and life balance.
- Communicate effectively with instructors and peers.
- Understand and use effective learning strategies and study skills for active note-taking, exam preparation, active reading, and test-taking.
- Connect to campus and community resources, opportunities, and clubs and organizations.
Coaching Expectations
What you can expect from a Coach:
- You can expect to clarify your goals and visions and for a Coach to ask questions to assess your current realities regarding current and past academic performance, school and life balance, and strategies or skills you have implemented in your life previously.
- You can expect to learn new, or build upon existing, academic skills that will ultimately help you succeed in your courses.
- You can expect to be referred to other support services both on campus and within the community. Referrals include academic advisement, tutoring, personal counseling, accessibility resources office, or clubs/organizations, financial resources, etc.
What Coaches can expect from you:
- Coaches expect you to participate fully in conversations and collaborate with your Coach on strategies and tools for success.
- Coaches expect you to be honest and forthcoming with your current academic performance and life realities. Appointments are conducted in a safe and private space. You will complete an initial assessment to begin the conversation and goal planning.
- Coaches expect you to commit to skills, strategies, or referrals discussed.
- Coaches expect you to attend appointments they schedule or to communicate with your Coach if you need to reschedule an appointment.
- Coaches expect you to attend follow up appointments to assess your goal outcomes and create new goals.

SUNY Broome offers different types of resources to support you in reaching your goals. If you are not sure where to start, scheduling an appointment with your Success Coach is a great place to begin. Your Success Coach can connect you to the correct support service.
Success Coach
- Clarifies goals, visions and career pathway.
- Formulates plan for organization, time management, and motivation.
- Assists with learning strategies and study skills.
- Connections to campus and community resources.
Academic Advisor
- Discusses educational plans, career goals, and academic standards, policies, and procedures.
- Reviews and communicates degree requirements.
- Assists in making academic decisions to reach educational goals.
Counselor
(Counseling Services)
- Provides free and confidential counseling to support mental health needs.
Career Counselor
- Reviews resumes and cover letters needed for job searching.
- Assists with career exploration.
- Explores employment on and off campus and transfer opportunities from SUNY Broome to other colleges/universities.
