Coaches support students in unlocking their potential and identifying and achieving their vision and goals. Coaches perform their work under the guidance of Self Determination Theory and the GROW model.
Self determination theory (Deci and Ryan, 1985) suggests that all humans have three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and belonging that promote growth and development. It is through these three components that beings find their motivation.
Success Coaches support students in developing autonomy for their learning, competence in their studies and goals, and belonging within their academic program and the college.
Throughout the student-coach relationship, Coaches use the GROW model (Alexander, Fine, and Whitmore, 1980) to structure their appointments and support students through the goal planning process.
GROW Model
- Goal: Student and coach choose a goal to work toward
- Reality: Coaches ask questions to assist students in raising awareness of their currently reality and past practices/skills used to achieve goals
- Options: Student and coach create a list of options to achieve the goal
- Will: Student commits to one or more options and practices skills during and in-between sessions
